Syrkus, Szymon

Born Apr. 24, 1893, in Warsaw; died there June 8,1964. Polish architect and theoretician of architecture.

Syrkus graduated from the architecture department of the Polytechnical Institute in Warsaw in 1922; he became a professor there in 1949. He also studied at the Academy of Art in Kraków (1918–21) and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1922–24). Syrkus helped found the Praesens association in 1926. He collaborated on various projects with his wife, Helena (born 1900). In the 1920’s and 1930’s he designed private dwellings in the functionalist style. From the 1940’s to 1960’s he worked on the unification of housing projects, notably in the Koto district in Warsaw (1947–62).
