Protein on the surface of T lymphocytes that specifically recognizes molecules of the major histocompatibility complex, either alone or in association with foreign antigens. Abbreviated TCR.

Presumably, the transposon hopped around the genome until it landed in the middle of a gene for an ancestral antibody or T cell receptor, breaking the gene into pieces that only RAG1 and RAG2 could reassemble.
