Tigre

(tē`grā), city (1991 pop. 256,005), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. A railroad terminus and river port with good road connections, Tigre is a market for the fruit grown in the surrounding area. The city has sawmills and shipyards, as well as a naval museum.

a people of northern Ethiopia, living in the vicinity of the cities of Akordat, Keren and Massawa in northern Eritrea and on the islands of the Dahlak Archipelago, as well as in Kassala Province of the Republic of the Sudan.

The Tigre number more than half a million (1970, estimate). Their language, Tigre, is related to the southern peripheral group of Semitic languages. Most Tigre are Muslims, although some are Monophysite Christians. Their primary occupations are the breeding of cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and mules and the cultivation of wheat, teff, durra, barley, and legumes. In the vicinity of Massawa, the Tigre fish and gather nacre and pearls.
