TRUSTe

(TRUSTe, San Francisco, CA, www.truste.org) A non-profit organization founded in 1997 by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the CommerceNet Consortium. Its mission is to promote privacy on the Internet. The TRUSTe seal, known as a "trustmark," signifies that the Web site will publicly state how all information obtained from you will be disclosed to others, and if there are options you can select. A recent survey conducted by NFO WorldGroup (Hodge, 2003) and sponsored by TRUSTe revealed that fears related to privacy were projected to have a significant negative impact on online shopping during the 2003 holiday season.
TRUSTe, the Microsoft of seal programs with more than 2,000 members, and BBBOnline, a distant second with nearly 800, scrutinize the privacy statements of potential and current members as an accountant would the books.
URAC plans to work with TRUSTe, a leader in the certification of websites' privacy practices, to implement the program.
