Born Feb. 24,1833, in Vienna; died Nov. 29, 1895, in Ellischau (now Nalžovy, Czechoslovakia). Austrian statesman. In 1867, 1870–71, and 1879, Taaffe was the Austrian minister of the interior. From 1868 to 1870 and 1879 to 1893 he was prime minister. In 1884 he enacted a law prejudicial to the workers and subsequently resorted to repression in combating the national liberation movement.
