Table Bay, inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, 6 mi (9.7 km) wide, lying off Western Cape, South Africa. Table Mt. Table Mountain, 3,567 ft (1,087 m) high, Western Cape, South Africa. It overlooks Cape Town and Table Bay. The summit is flat, and the dense white mist that often covers it is called the "tablecloth." A cableway (built 1929) carries visitors to the summit.

The shore of Table Bay was settled by the Dutch in 1652, with the founding of Cape Town. The open anchorage is protected by large breakwaters. Although less sheltered than other bays along the coast, it became a port of call for ships traveling to India and the East because of the availability of fresh water. The shore was permanently settled by the Dutch in 1652. Table Bay is 15 km long and measures 7.4 km in width at the entrance. It has depths of 11—40 m. The currents reach a velocity of 6 km/hr. Tides are semidiurnal and have a range of 1.7 m.
