It was the capital of Cape Province before that province's subdivision in 1994.

Table Mountain

a mountain having a flat summit and more or less precipitous, sometimes stepped, slopes. The flat surfaces are usually composed of hard, resistant rocks that form a protective layer. Broad expanses of territory in which table mountains predominate are called tablelands. Examples are to be seen in the Turgai Plateau and Ustiurt in the USSR and the Karroos in southern Africa.

Table Mountain

a mountain in southwestern Africa. Rising to an elevation of 1,087 m, Table Mountain is situated on the southern shore of Table Bay. It is composed of coarse-grained sandstones. The summit is plateau-like, and the steep slopes are covered with secondary thickets of heather-like, stiff-leaved ever green brush. The city of Cape Town is located at the foot of the mountain.
