For centuries the administrative, economic, and cultural centre of South Korea, it developed during the Choson dynasty (1392–1910) into one of the country's three big market cities. The area attracts visitors to its several parks, ancient pagodas, and the 9th-century Buddhist temple containing the Tripitaka. It is home to many universities and colleges.
