Size: 10,894 acres.
Established: Established on November 12, 1996. The federal government will own up to 180 acres, with the National Park Trust -- the purchaser of the property in 1994 -- retaining ownership of the rest of the preserve. The Nation Park Service will manage and operate the entire preserve under a public-private agreement.
Location: Preserve headquarters is 2 miles north of Strong City, Kansas, on US 177, 18 miles west of Emporia and 85 miles northeast of Wichita.
Facilities: Historic ranch headquarters area with buildings dating from the late 19th century; a late 19th century one-room school house; nature trail.
Activities: Hiking, self-guided and ranger-guided tours, living history demonstrations.
Special Features: Tallgrass prairie once covered 400,000 square miles of North America. Less than 4 % remains, mostly in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This nationally-significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem also includes historic buildings and cultural resources of the Spring Hill Ranch.

Just a two-hour drive away in the Kansas Flint Hills is Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, considered a more endangered ecosystem than the rainforest.
The shiner is found at the recently established Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in eastern Kansas.
The new ones are: In Kansas, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, including 11,000 acres of tallgrass prairie, and Nicodemus National Historic Site, a town founded as a community for free black slaves after the Civil War.
