Talmadge, Edwards (1747–1821) glove manufacturer; born in England, near the Scottish border. He came to America in 1770 and fought on the American side during the Revolution. He started his own tannery in Johnstown, N.Y. (1783), and he taught leather tanning to glovemakers. This began the glove and mitten industry in the U.S.A. He originated the "oil-tan" method for preparing buckskin. How to thank TFD for its existence?
