Talmadge, Herman Eugene (1913– ) governor, U.S. senator; born in Telfair, Ga. (son of Eugene Talmadge). A lawyer, he served as Georgia's governor (Dem., 1947–55), increasing funding for schools, highways, and hospitals. In the U.S. Senate (1957–81), he opposed civil rights legislation and supported defense spending, becoming Agriculture and Forestry Committee chair.
