Tamberlik, Enrico 

Born Mar. 16, 1820, in Rome; died Mar. 13, 1889, in Paris. Italian tenor.

Tamberlik, a student of C. Zerilli and G. Guglielmi, made his operatic debut in 1840 at the San Carlo Theater in Naples. He performed in many Italian theaters and toured other countries as well. From 1850 to 1863 he sang at the Italian Opera in St. Petersburg, and in 1870 he sang in Moscow. He left the stage in 1882.

Tamberlik had a strong voice, especially in the upper register. His performances were distinguished by their artistry and nobility. Among the parts he sang were Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Robert and John of Leyden in Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable and Le Prophète, Lionel in Flotow’s Martha, Alvaro at the premier of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, Manrico and the Duke in II Trovatore and Rigoletto, also by Verdi, and Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio.
