tangent galvanometer [′tan·jənt ‚gal·və′näm·əd·ər]
(engineering)
A galvanometer in which a small compass is mounted horizontally in the center of a large vertical coil of wire; the current through the coil is proportional to the tangent of the angle of deflection of the compass needle from its normal position parallel to the magnetic field of the earth.
