On the northern border of LA, east of Baton Rouge; organized Mar 6, 1869 from Livingston, Saint Tammany, Saint Helena, and Washington parishes. Name Origin: For the Indian tribe, which has since disappeared. The name is probably from Choctaw tanchapi 'cornstalk' or 'cob,' and ayua 'gather': 'corn gatherers.'
