Tappan, Henry

Tappan, Henry (Philip) (1805–81) university president, philosopher; born in Rhinebeck on the Hudson, N.Y. He gained international recognition as a philosopher with his works on free will in the 1830s and 1840s. As president (1852–63) he helped develop the University of Michigan into a great research institution modeled on German universities.
