Tarbell, Ida (Minerva) (1857–1944) journalist, historian; born in Erie County, Pa. A staff writer for the muckraking McClure's magazine (1894–1906), she published her explosive denunciation of John D. Rockefeller's fortune-building methods in History of the Standard Oil Company (1904). From 1906 to 1915, with other McClure's writers, she edited the American magazine. Her other books include The Business of Being a Woman (1912) and The Nationalizing of Business, on post-Civil War economic growth. How to thank TFD for its existence?
