Tarnogród Confederation
an alliance of magnates and the szlachta (gentry) in the Rzeczpospolita, directed against King Augustus II, who had brought Saxon troops into Poland in an attempt to establish an absolutist regime. The confederation was formed on Nov. 26, 1715, in the city of Tarnogród. Although Peter I opposed the confederation’s plans to dethrone Augustus, he insisted that Augustus accept its principal demands, namely, the withdrawal of Saxon troops from Poland, the restriction of independent powers of the king (those not requiring the sanction of the Sejm and Senate), and reduction of the army. The conditions of the agreement were ratified by the Niemy Sejm (Silent Sejm) in 1717. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
