In north-central TX, west of Dallas; organized Dec 20, 1849 from Navarro County. Name Origin: For Gen. Edward H. Tarrant (1796-1858), TX Ranger, legislator, and delegate to the TX Constitutional Convention (1845).

Area (sq mi): 897.48 (land 863.42; water 34.06). Pop per sq mi: 1876.80.
Pop 2005: 1,620,479. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 12.00%; 1990-2000 23.60%. Pop 2000: 1,446,219 (White 61.90%; Black or African American 12.80%; Hispanic or Latino 19.70%; Asian 3.60%; Other 12.40%). Foreign born: 12.70%. Median age: 32.30.
Income 2000: per capita $22,548; median household $46,179; Pop below poverty level: 10.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $30,299-$31,054.
