Rakvere
a city and administrative center of Rakvere Raion, Estonian SSR. Railroad station on the Tallinn-Narva line, 98 km east of Tallinn. Population, 19,000(1974). Commercial equipment is manufactured in Rakvere. There are starch-and-syrup, meat, milk-products, and lumber combines and a malt plant in the city. Rakvere has a pedagogical institute, a drama theater, and a museum of local lore. First mentions of the city appeared in the 13th century; the ruins of a 13th-century castle are located on Mount Vallimägi. The Vinni Demonstration Sovkhoz-Technicum is located near Rakvere.
