any of the elevated oval-shaped sensory end organs on the surface of the tongue, by means of which the sensation of taste is experienced

taste bud [′tāst ‚bəd]
(anatomy)
An end organ consisting of goblet-shaped clusters of elongate cells with microvilli on the distal end to mediate the sense of taste.

Further studies showed that TRI and TR2 are active only in taste cells and that their proteins cluster at taste pores, the cell-surface sites where molecules are thought to be actually tasted.
Those with denser taste pores tasted sugary and salty solutions much more intensely than did those with fewer taste pores.
