In northwestern MS, south of Memphis, TN; organized Apr 15, 1873 from DeSoto, Marshall, and Tunica counties. Name Origin: Named by T.S. Tate, an early settler, for his family.

Pop 2005: 26,548. State rank: 37. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.60%; 1990-2000 18.40%. Pop 2000: 25,370 (White 67.40%; Black or African American 31.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 0.20%. Median age: 34.20.
