Tate, James

Tate, James (Vincent) (1943–  ) poet; born in Kansas City, Mo. He studied at the University of Missouri (1963–64), Kansas State (B.A. 1965), and the University of Iowa (M.F.A. 1967). He taught at several universities, including Columbia (1969–71) and the University of Massachusetts: Amherst (1971). He lived in Pelham, Mass. He is known for his preoccupation with the use of language, seen in such books as The Lost Pilot (1967) and Constant Defender (1983).
