tau particle [′tau̇ ‚pärd·ə·kəl]
(particle physics)
A heavy, charged lepton with a mass of approximately 1777 megaelectronvolts, observed as a resonance in electron-positron collisions. Also known as tauon.

Along with the electron and muon, the tau particle and three varieties of neutrinos are now firmly established as members of the lepton group of subatomic particles.
When discussing the experiments that led to the discovery of the tau particle, SLAC's Martin L.
One possibility is a heavy neutrino -- perhaps even the neutrino thought to be associated with the tau particle, a massive cousin of the electron.
