Al-Wad, Tawfiq Yusif
Born 1908, in Beirut. Arab writer (Lebanese). Al-Wad was educated as a lawyer. The subject of the stories in his collections entitled Lame Boy (1936) and Woolen Jacket (1937) is the life of ordinary people. Al-Wad was one of the first writers in Arabic literature to deal with this theme. His novel Syrian Bread (1938) concerns the national war of liberation of the Syrians against the Turkish yoke. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, Al-Wad wrote primarily literary criticism. His play entitled The Tourist and the Interpreter (1964) received a national literary award.
