Taza

a city in northeastern Morocco and administrative center of Taza Province. Population, 55,200 (1971). Railroad station. Taza has wood-products, leather, textile, and flour milling industries. It also produces handmade rugs. It is a mountain resort. Nearby, in the Middle Atlas Mountains, is Tazzeka National Park.

Taza has been known since the eighth century A.D. One of the city’s architectural monuments is the Great Mosque (1294), located in front of the mihrab. The mosque is outstanding for the refinement and complexity of its architectural design; it has an openwork dome on liernes, with artesonado in the axial nave. Other notable structures are the Andalusian and Sidi Azzuz minarets, built in the 12th and the early 13th century.
