Now teaming with other veteran opera stars, like soprano Kiri Te Kanawa and bass Samuel Ramey, von Stade calls these concerts ``senior golf tours'' and plans to continue them even after retiring from the opera stage. Of the two planned public concerts for the queen, one was full of pop megastars (Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Cliff Richard, et al) and one classical (cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, and others). Kiri Te Kanawa is the soprano in the recording I have, and the first time I heard her sing "I know that my Redeemer liveth" I felt that if I could just go on hearing it I would never have a doubt of its truth--for it is impossible not to believe in the atmosphere her voice creates. |
