Tehuantepec

Tehuantepec (tāwäntāpĕk`), officially Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (sän`tō dōmĭng`gō), town (1990 pop. 33,445), Oaxaca state, S Mexico, on a wide bend of the Tehuantepec River not far from the Gulf of Tehuantepec, an arm of the Pacific. The town is on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The climate is hot and humid. The population is largely Zapotec. Tehuantepec is the commercial and social rival of Juchitán.

Tehuantepec 

a gulf of the Pacific Ocean, part of the southern coast of Mexico, off the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The Golfo de Tehuantepec measures approximately 110 km in length and approximately 450 km in width at the entrance. Prevailing depths are as much as 200 m; however, maximum depths in the western part reach 2,000 m. Semidiurnal tides have a range of 2.6 m. The chief port is Salina Cruz.

Tehuantepec 

an isthmus in Mexico between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The isthmus measures 215–240 km in width. Along the coast are alluvial marine lowlands, while in the central parts are highlands with elevations to 650 m. The isthmus is covered with tropical forests and savannas. It has significant deposits of sulfur and of oil and gas, which are exploited. A railroad, a highway, and an oil- and gas-products pipeline pass through the isthmus. The port of Coatzacoalcos is on the Bay of Campeche.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is usually considered to be the northern boundary of Central America.
