Telegraph Office
a specialized communications agency responsible for the transmission, reception, and delivery of telegrams. In the USSR telegraph offices are located in oblast or republic centers. They have direct connections to all city branches and raion communications centers in a given USSR telegraph zone and to other telegraph offices in the country. Modern telegraph offices have rooms provided for serving customers sending telegrams and technical equipment for telegram transmission, including telegraphs, telegraph switchboards, equipment for carrier-wave multichannel transmission, and power supply equipment, such as storage batteries, rectifiers, generators, and transformer substations.
