The Telework Exchange studies a sample of 3,500 federal workers and finds that three days a week spent telecommuting would save an average of $4,372 per worker a year and free up about 98 hours per worker in physical commuting time. Nissen, who directed a special telework initiative from 1997-2002, has found that some fields are more conducive to working from home than others: "Web design, computer programming, college and university counseling, writing, editing, and even teaching at the college level, where the prep work can be done at home, are all acceptable choices. There is a trend toward making jobs more mobile and permitting employees to have remote access to work from home," says Jane Anderson, director of Midwest Institute of Telecommuting, a nonprofit consultancy that assists employers and employees with designing telework programs. |
