In central GA, southeast of Macon; organized Dec 10, 1807 from Wilkinson County. Name Origin: For Edward Telfair (1735-1807), member of the Continental Congress (1777-79; 1780-83), and GA governor (1786-87; 1790-93).

Area (sq mi): 444.08 (land 441.09; water 2.99). Pop per sq mi: 29.90.
Pop 2005: 13,205. State rank: 110. Pop change: 2000-20005 12.00%; 1990-2000 7.20%. Pop 2000: 11,794 (White 59.30%; Black or African American 38.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.80%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 36.80.
