Temple University

Temple University, mainly in Philadelphia, Pa.; coeducational; founded 1884 by Russell H. Conwell Conwell, Russell Herman, 1843–1925, American Baptist minister and lecturer, b. Worthington, Mass. After practicing law, he was ordained (1879) and went to Philadelphia as a minister. He was founder and first president of Temple Univ.

, chartered 1888 as a college, became a university 1907. In 1965 the university became a state-related institution. It has a well-known medical school and a campus in Rome, Italy. Esther Boyer College of Music and Tyler School of Art are affiliated.
