Tenerife
a Spanish island in the Atlantic, off the NW coast of Africa: the largest of the Canary Islands; volcanic and mountainous; tourism and agriculture. Capital: Santa Cruz. Pop.: 778 071 (2002 est.). Area: 2058 sq. km (795 sq. miles)

Tenerife 

a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean that forms one of the Canary Islands; possession of Spain. Population, more than 500,000 (1970). The island covers an area of 1,946 sq km and is composed primarily of basalts. Its highest elevation is Pico de Teide, a volcano reaching 3,718 m. The climate is tropical, and there are evergreen shrubs and forests. Tropical farming includes the cultivation of bananas, citrus fruits, tobacco, and grapes. There is also fishing. The major city is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The island has climatic health resorts.
