Teodor Ilich Oizerman

Oizerman, Teodor Il’ich 

Born May 1 (14), 1914, in the village of Petroverovka, present-day Oktiabr’skii Raion, Odessa Oblast. Soviet philosopher. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1941. Fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–15.

Oizerman graduated from the department of philosophy of the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History in 1938. From 1954 to 1968 he headed the subdepartment of the history of foreign philosophy of the department of philosophy of Moscow State University. In 1971, Oizerman became the head of the section on the history of Western European and American philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Oizerman was a member of the editorial board and one of the authors of The History of Philosophy (vols. 1–6, 1957–69). His most important works deal with the history of pre-Marxist, Marxist, and contemporary Western European philosophy, as well as the theory of the history of philosophy. He has been awarded four orders and a number of medals.
