Taraior TeraiRegion of northern India and southern Nepal. It runs parallel to the lower ranges of the Himalayas and stretches from the Yamuna River to the Brahmaputra River. Numerous springs at its northern edge form several streams, including the Ghaghara River, that intersect the region and give it its marshy character. Much of the area's marshland, once malarial, has been drained and put under cultivation. Terai (in India) a belt of marshy land at the foot of mountains, esp at the foot of the Himalayas in N India Terai (also Tarai), a swampy area in India and Nepal, in the southern foothills of the Himalayas, in the northeast of the Indo-Gangetic plain. The Terai forms a strip 30 to 50 km wide at an elevation of up to 900 m. It is covered with jungles, which consist of sal trees, bamboo, magnolias, orchids, and lianas. A considerable part is covered with silt and overgrown with tall grasses. Some parts have been drained and planted with rice and other crops. The swampiness of the Terai is due to excessive precipitation, abundant groundwater, and poor drainage of the submontane plains. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
