In the Kuban and Terek River deltas, the most important birds are herons, coots, and some species of ducks. Many of them managed to escape through a ring of thousands of soldiers, and somehow, Chechen officials confirmed Monday, they apparently managed to drag dozens of hostages with them through the heavy gunbattle, across the frozen Terek River, and into the wooded forests of Chechnya. In a final violent exchange, after days of suffering relentless bombardment, some surviving guerrillas broke out of the village of Pervomayskoye early Thursday morning and, aided by scores of comrades who slipped across the frozen Terek River from Chechnya, attacked Russians who surrounded them. |
