Terent’ev, Aleksandr Petrovich 

Born Jan. 8 (20), 1891, in Moscow; died July 17, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet organic chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953).

Terent’ev graduated from Moscow University in 1913 and then worked at the university. He became a professor in the subdepartment of organic chemistry in 1936 and head of the subdepartment of special organic synthesis and analysis in 1951. His main works dealt with functional organic analysis, the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds, and the nomenclature of organic compounds. In 1947 he developed a new method of organic synthesis—the sulfonation of acidophobic compounds by complexes of sulfur dioxide and pyridine or dioxane.

Terent’ev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
