terephthalic acid [¦ter·əf¦thal·ik ′as·əd]
(organic chemistry)
C6H4(COOH)2A combustible white powder, insoluble in water, soluble in alkalies, sublimes above 300°C; used to make polyester resins for fibers and films and as an analytical reagent and poultry-feed additive. Also known aspara-phthalic acid; TPA.

Mounting debts forced them to close the pure terephthalic acid (PTA) plant which fed the smaller polyethylene terephthalate (PET) line.
Dow has helped PIC extend its geographical reach, having formed in July 2004 two 50:50 JVs with the Kuwaiti firm: MEGlobal, based in London, now producing and selling ethylene glycol (EG); and the Zurich-based Equipolymers which has a similar role for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins and purified terephthalic acid (PTA).
This polymer is produced by polymerizing Bio-PDO with either terephthalic acid (TPA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT).
