It has a land mass as great as the United States or Western Europe, with a diverse climate from cold to cool to warm, and a wide variety of soil types, including the famous Coonawarra terra rossa.
Australia has more than 60 official wine regions throughout Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia producing a wide variety of some cracking stuff: Tasmania, for example, has a cool climate ideal for making sparkling wine while the terra rossa (red earth) soil of Coonawarra produces Cabernets that are respected the world over.
The red terra rossa soil is very special' it is level and crumbly to touch with excellent drainage, sitting only 18 inches above pure limestone, itself a mere 6ft from a constant table of pure water.
