Tete (tā`tə, tā`tā), town (1997 pop. 101,984), capital of Tete province, W central Mozambique, on the Zambezi River. It is a trade center; coal mines are at nearby Moatize. Founded by the Portuguese in 1531, Tete long served as headquarters for traders, slave-raiders, and gold prospectors.
Tete a city in Mozambique and capital of Tete District. Population, 39,000 (1960). Tete is a port on the Zambezi River. It is the trade center of a cattle-raising region.
