A family of myodarian cyclorrhaphous dipteran insects in the subsection Acalyptratae.

As part of a study of African Tethinidae, Munari (1994) examined the types of Rhicnoessa minutissima Bezzi, 1908, recognising these as Chyromyidae and not Tethinidae.
The male was partially dissected by Munari (Munari 1994) who was the first to recognize that this species did not belong to the Tethinidae (now a subfamily of the Canacidae), but to the Chyromyidae.
