text messaging

Sending short messages to a smartphone, pager, PDA or other handheld device. Text messaging implies sending short messages generally no more than a couple of hundred characters in length. In Europe, text messaging was popularized by the GSM cellphone system's Short Messaging Service (SMS), which supports messages of up to 160 characters.

The T9 text input system promoted by AOL proved to be a major boon to the popularity of text messaging in the U.S. See GSM, T9 and SMS.
