Teziakov, Nikolai Ivanovich
Born Nov. 29 (Dec. 11), 1859, in Verkhnie Sergi, in what is now Sverdlovsk Oblast; died Jan. 2, 1925, in Moscow. Public-health physician in the zemstvo (district) medical system (seeZEMSTVO MEDICINE). One of the organizers of Soviet health care. In 1884, Teziakov graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Kazan. He headed public-health organizations in Perm’, Kherson, Voronezh, and Saratov provinces. In 1920 he became head of the department of health resort areas of the People’s Commissariat for Public Health of the RSFSR, and in 1923, deputy head of the commissariat’s Central Health Resort Bureau. Teziakov’s main works dealt with infant mortality, demography, social diseases, and other aspects of zemstvo medicine and Soviet health care. His book Agricultural Workers and Organization of Their Health Care in Kherson Province (1896) was used and favorably evaluated by V. I. Lenin in The Development of Capitalism in Russia.
