Thaulow, Fritz

Thaulow, Fritz (tou`lō), 1847–1906, Norwegian landscape painter. He studied in Paris. Influenced by impressionism, he painted canals, riverbanks, and snow scenes. Thaulow is represented in various Swedish galleries and in the museums of Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Worcester, Mass.

Thaulow, Fritz 

Born Oct. 20, 1847, in Christiania (now Oslo); died Nov. 5, 1906, in Volendam, the Netherlands. Norwegian painter, graphic artist, and writer on art.

Thaulow studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1870 to 1872, in Karlsruhe from 1872 to 1875, and in Paris in the late 1870’s. At the end of the 19th century, together with E. Werenskiold and C. Krohg, he led a movement for the development of distinctively national Norwegian art. Thaulow was influenced by French impressionism. In his mountain landscapes and rural winter scenes, he painted sunlit snow, freezing rivers, and clear skies with an exceptionally delicate touch.
