Thayer, Abbot (Handerson) (1849–1921) painter; born in Boston, Mass. He attended the National Academy of Design, New York (c. 1868), and studied in Paris (1875–79). After his return to New York (1879–1901), he settled in Dublin, N.H. (1901). A sentimental genre painter, he is remembered for his theories concerning the protective coloration of animals, known as "Thayer's Law."
