Established: 1910. Description: Dedicated to protecting New England's cultural and architectural heritage. Operates 36 historic house museums in five New England states. Studies and interprets New England's daily life, architecture, and decorative arts between the mid-17th and 20th centuries. Maintains archives and a conservation center; conducts educational programs and leads historic tours. Also sponsors a helpline for homeowners' questions about preserving and maintaining their old houses. Members: 3,000. Dues: $35/year.
Publications: Historic New England (quarterly); free to members.
