Sacher-Masoch, Leopold Von

Born Jan. 27, 1836, in L’vov; died Mar. 9, 1895, in Lindheim, Hesse. Austrian writer.

Sacher-Masoch’s best works were romantically colored novellas depicting the everyday life and customs of the peoples oppressed by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy: the collections Galician Tales (1871; new edition, 1881), Hebrew Tales (1878), and New Hebrew Tales (1881). The origin of the term “masochism” is linked with the pathological themes of Sacher-Masoch’s erotic novels (Venus in Furs and others).
