Arches National Park, 76,519 acres (30,979 hectares), E Utah; est. as a national monument 1929, designated a national park 1971. Located in red-rock country and overlooking the gorge of the Colorado River, this area contains a vast and unusual array of natural rock formations. Arches National Park

Preserve, eastern Utah, U.S. Located on the Colorado River north of Moab, the preserve was established as a national monument in 1929 and as a national park in 1971. Its area is about 120 sq mi (310 sq km). The park's sandstone has been eroded into unusual shapes, including Courthouse Towers, Fiery Furnace, and Devils Garden, the site of Landscape Arch, at 306 ft (93 m) the longest freestanding natural rock bridge in the world.

Established: Proclaimed as a national monument on April 12, 1929; established as a national park on November 12, 1971.
Location: In southeast Utah, 5 miles north of Moab along Highway 191.
Facilities: Campground (é), group campsites, picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Camping, hiking, bicycling, auto touring, interpretive programs (March-October).
Special Features: Highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures, park preserves more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations including balanced rocks, fins, and pinnacles.
