Nöldeke, Theodor 

Born Mar. 2, 1836, in Harburg; died Dec. 25, 1930, in Karlsruhe. German Orientalist, philologist, and historian. Professor of Oriental languages at the universities of Kiel (from 1868) and Strasbourg (1872–1906).

In 1885, Nöldeke was made a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and in 1927 an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Nöldeke wrote on Semitic, Arabic, Iranian, and Turkic studies. His major works are about the origin of the Koran and the chronology of the writing of its parts, the ancient and medieval history of Iran, the history of the Semitic languages, and the greatest monuments of Oriental literature (including Shah Nama and Kalila and Dimna).
