thermosets, materials that can not be softened on heating. In thermosetting polymers, the polymer chains are joined (or cross-linked) by intermolecular bonding. Thermosets are usually supplied as partially polymerized or as monomer-polymer mixtures. Cross-linking is achieved during fabrication using chemicals, heat, or radiation; this process is called curing or vulcanization. Important thermosets include phenolics, ureas, melamines, epoxies, polyesters, silicones, rubbers, and polyurethanes. thermosets [′thər·mə‚sets] (materials) Polymeric materials that usually have a crosslinked network. They are formed into a permanent shape and are cured (set) by a chemical reaction that may require heat and pressure. Thermoset polymers are typically insoluble, and cannot be remelted or reformed into another shape after curing. Also known as thermosetting resin. How to thank TFD for its existence? | What hot runners are to thermoplastics, cold runners are to thermosets like liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Composite Solutions: Thermosets and Thermoplastics. The 45% glass-reinforced PPA reduced both the weight [by 60%] and the wall thickness of the "power piston" of Delphi's new vacuum brake boosters when compared to traditional thermosets. |
