Thimphu (thĭmp `) or Thimbu (thĭmb `), city (1997 est. pop. 45,000), capital and largest city of Bhutan, W Bhutan, on the Wang Chu. The Tashichoedzong, a fortress monastery dating from the 13th cent., has been the seat of Bhutan's government since 1952. At the northern end of the valley where Thimphu is located are two important Buddhist monasteries, Tango (13th cent.) and Cheri (1619). Dechenchoeling Palace, the official residence of the Bhutanese king, is just north.ThimphuCity (pop., 2002 est.: 45,000), capital of Bhutan. It lies on the Raidak River in the Himalayas. It was designated the official seat of government in 1962. The Tashi Chho castle, a traditional fortified monastery and one of the finest examples of traditional Bhutanese architecture, houses the offices of the royal government. The local economy is based on agriculture and lumbering. Thimbu, Thimphu the capital of Bhutan, in the west in the foothills of the E Himalayas: became the official capital in 1962.
